About this Marine Selector Tool
This Marine Selector tool is supported by a sophisticated solar simulation service. Each time you change a product option (for example the Flash Character or LED Color) we send a request to this simulator: one request per product. Each request takes about 2-3 seconds to process. Sometimes, when many people are using this tool, at the same time, the simulations will take a long time. You should have a response within a minute.
If by chance you change a product option while some requests are pending the display may get a little messy. If this happens just wait until all pending requests are serviced and then make another configuration change to start the simulations again.

Array to Load (ALR)
Array to Load ratio (ALR). This is the ratio of Energy going in to the system (gathered by the solar panel “array”) to Energy leaving the system as LED light (the “load”). If ALR is less than one, there is not enough energy being received during the day to meet the LED power requirements during the night. For a safety margin to allow for variability in sunlight (cloudy or rainy days,etc…) solar designers usually want to see an ALR of a minimum 1.1 or 1.2
A measure of how clear the atmosphere is. Atmospheric clarity is affected by several factors including smog, smoke particles and water vapour. In most cases, a transmissivity of 0.74 is used for range calculations, although in some especially clear tropical locations transmissivity of 0.85 is often used.
Effective Intensity (Eff. Instensity)
Effective intensity is measured in Candelas (cd). The effective intensity of a flashing light is equal to the intensity of a fixed light of the same colour which will produce the same visual range under identical conditions of observation.
Days of Autonomy
The number of days (i.e. 24-hour periods) a self-contained solar lantern may be expected to operate normally if all solar charging is removed.
GPS flash synchronization
GPS flash synchronizatio allows any number of lanterns, anywhere on the globe, to flash in perfect unison. Synchronized lights are easier for ships and other craft to distinguish against complicated background lighting such as port entrances. Unison flashing also helps mariners rapidly perceive the dimensions of navigational hazards.

Note: A Carmanah lantern cannot GPS synchronize with a Sabik lantern

Duty Cycle Limit
A flash pattern’s duty cycle is the percentage of time in a complete cycle of flash pattern that the lantern is lit. For Carmanah Products, the duty cycle limit is a setting that can control the brightness of the LED, although it does not translate directly into an intensity ratio. Details on how Carmanah M700-series lanterns handle duty cycle limits can be found in the User Manuals.
Automatic Light Control (ALC)
Automatic Light Control (ALC) software monitors the battery voltage and amount of solar charge. ALC determines if the lantern can continue to operate at the programmed intensity level under current solar charging conditions. If required, ALC will automatically reduce the duty cycle limit so the lantern will continue to operate. ALC is ideal for installations where there may be plenty of sunlight in the summer, but only marginal sunlight in the winter. In this case, the lantern will be bright during the summer and grow dimmer through the winter as the ALC adjusts the intensity, and then brighten again in the spring.
